As the Gulf region looks for opportunities to further strengthen ties with Mexico, The Gulf States Initiative has taken shape.  The Initiative is a revitalization of The Gulf of Mexico States Accord (GOMSA), an international cooperative agreement initiated in 1995 by the Governors of the eleven Mexican and US Border States along the Gulf of Mexico basin. Original participant states included: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas on the US side; Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatan on the Mexican side. Program participants included individuals from a variety of sectors including: policy, business, economic development and academia.

In its current form, the Gulf States Initiative seeks to once again reinforce commonalities between the Gulf States of the United States and Mexico. In 2014, the Consul General of Mexico in New Orleans invited appropriate private sector representatives to New Orleans, Louisiana from the Mexican states of Campeche and Yucatan to discuss the synergies of our Gulf States in order to bring new business opportunities under a renewed Gulf States Accord. Since that time, a trade mission to Yucatan and Campeche was held in May 2015, followed by a trade mission from the Mexican states to Lafayette, Louisiana in April 2016.

To continue to build on momentum generated by the previous missions, the Initiative will be taking a trade delegation to Mexico in January 2017.

Industry areas of focus for the upcoming mission are:

  • Energy (Oil/Gas)
  • Construction/commercial development
  • Gulf of Mexico Environment (Coastal Management)
  • Maritime/Seaports
  • Health Care
  • Agriculture/Agri-Business
  • Workforce (immigration)
  • Higher Education
  • Air Service
  • Security
This trade delegation will consist of business executives, economic development professionals and high ranking Mexican dignitaries. Louisiana and Mississippi are already committed to participation in the trade mission and both are actively recruiting businesses for this mission. We recognize the distinct logistic and natural resource advantages the Gulf region presents for trade with Mexico and encourage EDO’s and our Gulf state neighbors to participate.
